The past continuous is often used together with the simple past to show that one thing happened while another thing was in progress: I was talking on the phone when my sister arrived.

If you want to express that a new action happened in the middle of another action, you need both tenses:Simple Past the new action and Past Progressive for the action already in progress.

We could start our story with the past continuous. ‘As I was waiting for a bus’, or ‘I was watching TV’ and then interrupt this with a past simple verb. For example, ‘As I was waiting for a bus, I saw Sergio Aguero in his car.’ Or, ‘I was watching TV when Barcelona scored a goal.’ The action we use for the past simple is often very sudden.

We often use the past continuous and the past simple in the same sentence. The action in the past simple is short and usually unexpected. It interrupts the “longer” action which is generally in a past continuous form.

Note:with verbs not normally used in the continuous form, the simple past is used. The past continuous of any verb is composed of two parts : the past tense of the verb "to be" (was/were), and the base of the main verb +ing.
