Simple Past X Past Continuous

It was getting dark, and I was walking fast. Suddenly. ·We use the past simple for completed actions in the past, and we use the past continuous for actions in progress (not finished) in the past.

The past continuous is formed almost identically to the present continuous tense; the only difference is thatthe verb to be appears in the simple past, rather than in the simple present, before the present participle of the main verb.

The action may or may not have continued up to the moment we are talking about it. I’d been living in Italy for three years when we first met. When I woke up, I saw that it had been raining. We often use already with the past perfect to emphasize that the action happened earlier.

We make the past continuous with was or were and the -ing form of the verb. She couldn't come to the party. She was working. Three years ago, we were living in my home town. When we use these two tenses together, it shows us that the past simple action happened in the middle of the past continuous action, while it was in progress

What differentiates them is the status of the action they describe.The past simple refers to an action that finished in the past, while the past continuous refers to an action that was in progress at the time of speaking.

"Were having" is correct because "At 8 p. m. last night" shows an action in progress interrupted by another past action.
